Exhibiting Architecture at the MAMBO

the exhibitions presented in the gallery are but an expression of multiple intersecting networks…

Exhibiting Architecture at the Modern Art Museum of Bogota, 1983-1995

Between 1983 and 1995, the Modern Art Museum of Bogota (MAMBO) in Colombia hosted a Department of Architecture that over the course of twenty exhibitions greatly assisted in establishing architecture as a public concern in Colombia. Thus, this research project takes as a starting point the twenty architecture exhibitions produced by the now forgotten Department of Architecture at the MAMBO to assemble a history of exhibiting architecture in Colombia. By following the traces left by the Department, a series of associations between architecture exhibitions and multiple interacting networks will also be revealed, in which the exhibitions presented in the gallery are but an expression of those networks.

Two overarching objectives guide this research. On the one hand, to analyze the productive role of architecture exhibitions as key actors within complex cultural networks, highlighting their ephemeral, mediating, and reflecting nature. On the other hand, to uncover the history of architecture exhibitions in Colombia, which have not been acknowledge as a vital component of the dissemination of architecture culture in the country or as a relevant piece in architecture exhibition history.
