Architecture finds meaning in the experiences it creates and in the compositions by which it is created…
Pezo von Ellrichshausen: architecture doesn’t need any explanation
The duo that forms the interdisciplinary Chilean office Pezo von Ellrichshausen (Mauricio Pezo and Sofía von Ellrichshausen) have boldly declared their position that “architecture doesn’t need any explanation.” Blurring the lines between art and architecture - in what they term “architectonic art” – they have developed this position with compelling work that is conceptual and intellectual, but also sensual and physical. If their buildings explore issues of geometry, spatial experience, materiality, sequences and connections, their drawings present a layered understanding of architecture by exploring the tensions between documentation and experiencing the true narrative of a building or space.
Architecture Doesn’t Need Any Explanation is an exhibition about discovery. Through a close reading of select projects, this exhibition reflects on PvE’s specific processes of making architecture and art, and how traces of these are left in their work, sometimes through a strict geometrical order, sometimes through unique spatial experiences, or sometimes through a continuous exploration of art and architecture. Rather than showing architecture, this exhibition attempts to probe its depths and its meaning—from its poetic imagination to its material expression—towards a revelation.
